Emile Marie Besnard (1863 - 1925) fut commandant de la compagnie de Sapeurs Pompiers de Rennes

Depuis 1983, la rue est devenue l'allée Emile Marie Besnard.

Elle fut initialement dénommée rue Emile Besnard par délibération du conseil municipal de la Ville de Rennes le 6 novembre 1936 puis prît sa dénomination actuelle le 7 février 1983.
